With a capacity of 55000, the DY Patil Sports Stadium is one of the biggest multi-sports arenas in the country. This stadium is based out of Nerul, a suburb in New Bombay, or Navi Mumbai, and while it is a cricket stadium, the DY Patil Stadium is also used for other sports and music concerts.

Before we even get to cricket, it is worth pointing out that the DY Patil Stadium has played host to music concerts comprising of the likes of Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, U2 and Hardwell among others. Some of the football matches played at this ground include the 2023–24 AFC Champions League, 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup and 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Notable Events at the DY Patil Stadium

Mumbai City FC, a club which plays in the Indian Super League, plays its home games at this ground with the DY Patil Stadium having been the venue for the ISL 2014 final as well.

Women’s international cricket has been hosted at this ground even as a few of the IPL games have been played here too including one in the very first edition of the tournament between Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers. The Chargers had won that encounter by a whopping 10 wickets thanks to a sizzling Adam Gilchrist century.

Over the years, it has been used by visiting IPL teams to hold their net and training sessions, while in more recent times, the Women’s Premier League (the T20 league for women) has been played at this venue as well.

The DY Patil Stadium could have also hosted a men’s ODI between India and Australia in 2009 but it got cancelled because of unseasonal rains.

How to get to DY Patil Stadium in Pune by Bus, Metro or Train?

The stadium is quite some distance away from the city centre. If you are taking a flight into Mumbai, then it could take you anywhere between an hour and 90 minutes to travel to this stadium by road. There is also a Mumbai Airport Bus, S-105 which travels from the airport to close to the stadium but the overall journey for that will be over two hours.

If you are taking a train into Mumbai, it depends on where the train halts. The best option is to get off at the Thane station and travel to DY Patil Stadium by road. It will take you 45-60 minutes to get there. From the Borivili railway station, it will take you nearly an hour and a half, while from either Mumbai Central or Victoria Terminus it will be a one-hour drive.
