What is The Hundred?

A bit of The Hundred. Instead of playing T20 cricket as is, the ECB decided to change things around and have come up with a 100-ball competition instead and aptly named it The Hundred.

So, instead of teams batting for 20 overs (or 120 balls) every innings, as is the case in a T20 competition, they will be playing 100 balls in each of their essays. What this does is help matches finish quicker – instead of the typical three and a half hours that a T20 match takes, matches in The Hundred get over in two and a half hours.

Apparently, one of the reasons why The Hundred was invented was because the ECB thought it would be easier to understand for English audiences than the traditional formats of the game.

The Hundred Format

Since this is a new format, it’s key to understand how the matches in The Hundred work.
As mentioned earlier, teams can bat up to 100 balls in each of the innings instead of the traditional 20 overs in a T20 match. Instead of changing the bowling ends after every six balls, it happens after every 10 balls, reducing the number of breaks within a match.

Bowlers in T20 cricket (and in other formats of the game) bowl six balls per over. In The Hundred, they can bowl five or 10 successive deliveries. The most that a bowler can bowl in an innings is 20 balls (or the equivalent of four overs in a T20 game).

There are Powerplays for the first 25 balls of the innings and only two players are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Instead of the usual no-ball costing a run to the bowling team, in The Hundred, this is worth two runs with a Free Hit to follow.

Tournament Format

The Hundred is played by both women’s and men’s cricketers. There are eight teams involved in both those formats, with each team playing eight matches on a home and away basis.

Each of the men’s and women’s teams plays seven matches against the other teams in the competition and a second match against a team from a neighbouring region.

The top three teams in both, the men’s and women’s sections of the competition proceed to the knock-out round with the top-placed side getting a bye to the final and the remaining two featuring in a knock-out semifinal or an Eliminator.
