While the Lanka Premier League is a league-based T20 tournament played in Sri Lanka, the country also hosts another T20 competition by the name of Major Clubs T20 Tournament which sees more than 20 Sri Lanka-based clubs participate in it. What is the Major Clubs T20 Tournament Format?

We have information on how the 2023 edition of the competition was played. The 2024 format, if changed, will be updated suitably.

Last year, there were a total of 22 teams who participated in the Major Clubs T20 Tournament. They were divided into four groups of six, six, five and five teams respectively.

Each of the teams in every group played a match against each of the other teams in their own group. At the end of the round-robin stage of the competition, the top side from every group qualifies for the semifinals which is followed by the final.

Major Clubs T20 Tournament 2024 Schedule

We are still awaiting schedule details for the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Last year, the Major Clubs T20 Tournament was played between May 27 and June 11, with four to six matches played on a daily basis in the tournament. The last set of league matches were played on June 7, the two semifinals were held on June 9 before the final on June 11.

Major Clubs T20 Venues & Stadiums

There is a plethora of stadiums and venues used for the Major Clubs T20 which include the following:

  • SSC, Colombo

The two semifinals in the 2023 were held at the PSS in Colombo while the SSC in the same capital city hosted the final.

How to Watch the Major Clubs T20 Tournament 2024 Live Streaming?

The live broadcast of the 2024 edition of the Major Clubs T20 Tournament will be available on one or the other channel. We will update this once we have more information around it closer to the start of this competition.

What Happened Last Year at the Major Clubs T20?

The four teams that topped the groups A, B, C and D were Nondescripts Cricket Club, Colts Cricket Club, Ace Capital Cricket Club and Moors Sports Club.

Nondescripts finished their league engagement with nine points from their five matches, while Colts and two other clubs in their group all had six points. Colts Cricket Club narrowly edged out Bloomfield Cricket & Athletic Club and Sebastianites Cricket & Athletic Club on their better net run-rate.

Ace Capital Cricket Club won all four of their matches to finish on eight points in their group while Moors Sports Club had nine points from five matches.

In the first semifinal, Nondescripts Cricket Club chased down Moors Sports Club with 3.1 overs to spare in a 13-over-a-side encounter. The second semifinal saw Ace Cricket Club make 147/8 in their 20 overs but Colts made that in 18.4 overs.

The final was rained off after the toss.
